The Buddha of Bed-Stuy was shot in cooperation with the event’s sponsors, Harlowtown, which makes possible affordable legal services, computer literacy, and, even, WiFi access to low-income communities; Urban River Arts, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering the artistic, emotional, and social development of children and adults through the arts; and Child Development Support Corporation (CDSC), which empowers families by ensuring they acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for successful living. For one week, in early spring 2010, at the CDSC in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, the Venerable Lama Tenzin Yignyen, with the participation of local community and school groups, created, almost grain by sand grain, a traditional Tibetan sand mandala whose intricacies and entire being would be swept away by the week’s end.
